When I meet with patients, I am able to offer great solutions for most of their cosmetic needs. But occasionally people request improvement in a certain area, and I just don’t have a great answer. One of those is the dreaded double chin. Traditionally, liposuction has been the best solution for this problem. While this is an effective procedure for many patients, I often have patients that do not want an invasive procedure.
According to a survey in 2015 conducted by the American Society of dermatologic surgery, 67% of people are bothered by double chin. Isn’t that surprising? And unfortunately, diet and exercise often do not help. Patients complain that their double chin makes them appear older or heavier than they actually are. With the introduction of Kybella this year, I now have a great answer when patients ask me to improve their double chin. Kybella is a revolutionary FDA-approved injectable that significantly reduces the fat under the chin leading to a more desirable profile.
Kybella is a synthetic product that mimics the action of bile acid, which is produced by our gallbladder to digest the fat that we eat. Once injected under the chin, Kybella physically destroys fat cells. And those fat cells do not return with time. Destroyed fat cells are naturally eliminated by your body’s metabolism.
In a clinical study, 79% of people treated with Kybella had improved satisfaction with the area beneath the chin. These patients reported positive emotional impact after treatment.
Most patients need 2-4 treatments. However some get desirable results with one treatment, and others need as many as five or six treatments for maximum outcome.
On the treatment day, after some topical numbing is applied to the double chin area, a series of small injections are made into the fat in this area. Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The procedure only takes 15 or 20 minutes. For the next 5 to 7 days, patients experience swelling and possibly bruising in this area. While most people can continue their daily activities, coverage with a scarf or even make up maybe necessary. After a week or so, the area becomes less swollen and the skin becomes somewhat firm. This is the inflammatory process, and this process can lead to not only improvement in fat but also tightening in the treated area.
One month after treatment, patients return to clinic for reassessment and potentially another treatment. This process is repeated until desired results have been achieved.
All of our physicians have been trained to inject Kybella. We would love to see you for a consultation to see if this treatment is right for you.
