Botox

What is Botox?

Botox® is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Common areas for Botox treatment include the “11” lines (frown lines), crow’s feet, and forehead lines. It can also be used to treat medical conditions, such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), teeth grinding, muscle spasms, and migraines. Wrinkles are caused by repeated facial movements over time. If you relax those muscle movements early on, the wrinkle may never form! However, Botox can be very effective no matter what age you start.

Every patient is different, but most people see optimal results one to two weeks after treatment, and results last for three to four months. You may experience some slight bruising and swelling right after your treatment. Otherwise, there is no significant downtime.

At Village Dermatology, Botox is always injected by one of our Board-Certified Dermatologists. Your Dermatologist will customize your treatment plan to your goals to ensure the most natural-looking results.

Botox Cost

Botox can be priced in one of two ways:

  1. Pricing by the “unit”
  2. Pricing by the “area”

A unit of Botox is simply a standard form of measurement for these types of products. Similar to an ounce of liquid or several pounds of dirt, a unit gives the manufacturer and the medical provider a way to meter out the dosing in a consistent manner. All medical practices buy Botox from the manufacturer, Allergan, by the unit. Moreover, most medical practices will charge by the unit as that is the way they inject.

However, there are some medical practices that will charge by the area. Typically, there are 3 areas where Botox is injected.

  1. Between the eyebrows – Also known as the Glabella
  2. Forehead
  3. Crow’s feet around the eyes

There are other places you can inject Botox, but these are the main areas in the market that medical practices use to communicate the treatment areas to potential patients.

The difference between the 2 methods is in Unit pricing the patient will pay for the exact amount of units they need to achieve their desired result. In Area pricing, there is a fixed cost for each area determined by the practice for those specific treatment areas.

Each medical practice will set its prices for each Unit or Area, based on several factors. To learn more about how Botox pricing is determined click the link in here (Botox Cost).

Botox Side Effects

Botox is a very safe treatment, which is why it is the most popular medical aesthetic treatment on the planet. Often affectionately referred to as “lunchtime lift”, Botox is a procedure that allows patients to get their treatment and then move on about their day. However, like all medical treatments, you should discuss the potential for side effects with your medical provider. The most common side effects we see at Village Dermatology are redness at the injection site and some pin-point bruising. This is because Botox is injected with very small needles (the smallest we can get) and anytime a needle is used there is a possibility of bruising and redness. However, most of the time these are very transient and can be covered easily with makeup.

If you are concerned about Botox side effects then that is why you should choose Village Dermatology as your Botox provider because we have Board Certified Dermatologists that have been expertly trained in Botox and we have been providing Botox Treatments to the Birmingham area for over a decade! Come in for a complimentary consultation and discuss any concerns you may have with our medical team and decide whether Botox is right for you.

Botox Fun Fact

Did you know that Botox® can help with depression?  According to a study by M. Axel Wollmer, it appears that your muscles may be “involved in the development and maintenance of negative emotions.”  The theory is that Botox® interrupts the feedback from your muscles to your brain and relaxing those muscles can help with depression.
