Sunscreen 101
Sun avoidance is best, especially 10am -
2 pm.
Protective clothing can be very
beneficial.
Sunscreen should be used on face, neck,
chest and hands daily (365 days a year!!) and should be applied in
the morning BEFORE any exposure and reapplied often.
Zinc oxide and
titanium dioxide are the best sunscreen ingredients, so be
sure to look at the label. They also have least risk of allergic
reactions. Have sensitive skin? Unable to tolerate most sunscreens
because of burning or running in your eyes? At Village Dermatology,
we offer several chemical-free sunscreens that are perfect for you.
These are also the best sunscreens for babies and children.
There are many new sunscreens available
that are very cosmetically elegant, not greasy, non-comedogenic,
non-irritating, and, yes, even acceptable to you guys!! Come in and
we’ll let you try our testers to find the perfect sunscreen for you.
UVA and UVB protection are important, so,
again, read the label. With effective levels of zinc or titanium,
you are covered.
SPF’s of 30 and above are thought to be
beneficial.
It is never too late to start using
sunscreen!
Sunscreens do have limitations…
-
Must apply heavily to get the SPF on the label
-
They do not reverse sun damage
-
They are much less effective in preventing
long term photoaging and skin cancers when used inconsistently
and when applied after sun exposure has begun.
-
They must be re-applied every 2-4 hours during
swimming and other outdoor activities
DO NOT let sunscreen be
your excuse to stay in the sun all day!!!!
